We build NPR.

We, the rank and file employees of NPR's Digital Media Division (Content Operations, Design, Engineering, Online Support, and Product Management), are proud to announce we are joining our broadcast colleagues in NABET-CWA Local 31.

Like so many tech workers who have organized this spring, we want to do our part to promote professional ethics; technical excellence; and diversity, equity, and inclusion in our industries. The formation of our union also represents our commitment to public media’s journalistic and cultural mission in the digital era.

Our team nurtured NPR’s digital presence from conception to maturity, and maintains the complex systems that power products for our audiences and the public radio network at large. We design, build, and support the network of systems responsible for delivering NPR's content through a multitude of platforms and formats, including websites, voice and mobile apps, podcasts, technologies that enable fundraising and sponsorship, and much more.

With a seat at the bargaining table, we aim to institute:

  • Equal pay for equal work

  • Policies restricting the use of temporary status

  • Hiring processes that ensure the consideration of a diverse pool of applicants

  • Compensation comparable to peer organizations

  • Pathways to advancement in every career track

  • Staffing levels commensurate with the needs of our growing audience

  • Processes for effective collaboration across the organization

By joining NABET-CWA Local 31, we are building a bridge between broadcast and digital and charting a path toward ever closer collaboration with our newsroom, programming, and RAD (Research, Archives, and Data) colleagues in SAG-AFTRA. We are so grateful to these union pioneers, whose hard work built the NPR we love today.

We ask that NPR leadership voluntarily recognize our union and work with us in good faith to build the NPR our Member stations and audience deserve.
